Opened in 1935, The Albany Theatre is a historic theatre and thriving arts centre with a fascinating history. Originally a part of what was then Coventry Technical College, it housed homeless citizens following heavy bombing in 1940 and after the war years became the Midland Theatre Company, the first funded and well supported “Rep” which went on to become the repertory company at the Belgrade.
In more recent decades it came under significant threat and a programme of restitution, repairs and developments led to a formal re-opening of the auditorium in 2013. Now run as a charity, its future has been secured for at least the next 25 years. The Albany Theatre has a burgeoning reputation for providing a flourishing theatre and music scene that promises to make a valued contribution to Coventry’s UK City of Culture status.
